Overcoming Adversity with Three Legs

10/10/2022

After an accident when Dexter Dog Ouray was a puppy left him with three legs, the industrious pup decided he wanted to get back to moving as fast as he could, by teaching himself to walk on his back legs. Living in Ouray, he has amassed a large fan base across the world through social media, and took a little jaunt down to Durango during the annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering to bring some light, laughter, and smiles to the town. Walking in downtown Durango, there are many things that may catch your eye, from vintage storefronts to tasty-looking treats from the nearest restaurant. The morning of the Cowboy Poetry Gathering Parade, there was a furry special guest who brought smiles and requests for photos from passersby. Walking upright, just like his human, Dexter Dog of Ouray was pleased to take in all of the admiration. You're watching the Local News Network, brought to you by the Payroll Department and Happy Pappy's Pizza and Wings. I'm Wendy Graham Settle.

Dexter is actually our family dog. He's a Brittany and he had and accident and he figured out how to walk upright.

He didn't trust his front leg, its now pinned at the elbow and um, the leg itself is straight so he either can move it from his wrist or from the shoulder. So he can't move that elbow at all. There were like 5 different surgeries and he figured out during that whole time, how to walk upright.

Dexter, who lives in Ouray, is as much a showman as he is a dog. From checking out the train as it went by, to showing off his bipedal skills during the parade. It was easy to see how he's managed to inspire so many in person and on social media. Although popular in his hometown, it wasn't until a tourist visiting Ouray caught a video of Dexter on his walk that he began to go viral.

Dexter has close to a million followers, we're super close on tiktok. He's also on instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.

Parades are a special favorite of Dexter, and at the Cowboy Parade there were no shortage of friends, new and old, cheering him on.

Some had gotten the chance to meet him at a meet-and-greet the evening before, for others it was their first glimpse at the self-taught bipedal pooch.

I just think it's incredible how he overcame such a disability. We put ourselves in such boxes, and he's figured it out and he's remained happy all the way through. So yeah, just keep going and going for your walks and keeping yourself going and active I think is really Dexters way of life.
