Farmington City counselors unanimously approved a construction contract to an Albuquerque-based contractor for the Pinyon Hills Boulevard Expansion Project. The project, the need for which has been studied for 20 years, will provide a secondary connection across the Animas River. The project will extend Pinyon Hills Boulevard south from East Main Street to County Road 3000, over the river. San Juan County is then responsible for the eventual connection of the road to County Road 390 and then to US Highway 64. In 2022, the city received a $40 million grant from the American Rescue Act, of which it has already put funds to the project in preparation for awarding the construction contract. Work is scheduled to start this March, and the project is anticipated to take approximately two years to complete. The Outdoor Recreation Industry Initiative is offering a wilderness first aid training this April, taught by National Outdoor Leadership School instructors. The course will train participants in outdoor-specific first aid, from the patient assessment system to how to provide adequate first aid promptly. The course is vital for anyone who plays or works in the outdoors. Participants will receive a two-year certification from NOLS upon successful completion of the course. Register today for the two-day course starting April 20th, and fees are $280. The Farmington Chamber of Commerce celebrated the 2023 Business and Citizen of the Year at its Annual Chamber Banquet. The awards recognize individuals and businesses who contribute to the community in different ways, including philanthropy, volunteerism, community involvement, and advocacy. The 2023 Business of the Year went to Farmers Insurance Manchester Agency, and the 2023 Citizen of the Year went to John Byrom of Process Equipment and Service Company.
