Spend a Day Out With a Shelter Pup

Make a shelter dog's day by taking them on a doggy day out, an initiative by the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter to help adoptable dogs find their new home. Be aware of lane closures on Road 350 as construction commences on the bridge over the Animas River. Come and celebrate local farmers and artisans at the weekly Makers Market and Grower's Market. And the 70th Annual Gym and Mineral Show will kick off July 12th at the La Plata County Fairgrounds and Event Center. The family-friendly event has something for everyone. Looking for a fun way to volunteer this summer? Farmington Regional Animal Shelter invites you to a Doggie Day Out. Enjoy a one-on-one day out with an adoptable pup from the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter. Whether you want to go off on an adventure or snuggle up with a cuddle bug, the initiative helps give the pups a break from the stress of the animal shelter and a chance to show off their true personalities. And by taking a pup out for a day, you can help provide valuable information to shelter staff. The dog also has more opportunities to meet potential adopters by being out in the community. Learn more at the shelter's website or by stopping by. Shop local this summer and support local growers and artisans at weekly markets. The Maker's Market, which runs through October, is every Thursday from three to dusk, located in the heart of downtown Farmington at Orchard and Main. The Maker's Market features local jams, jellies, handmade goods, and more. There are drop-in booths available for $8 or $25 for a five day vendor pass. The Grower Market at the Farmington Museum and Visitor Center is every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and the Tuesday market will begin in July, running from 4:30 to 7:00 PM. Featuring locally grown food, crafts and community, the Grower's Market is a great place to pick up some fresh veggies for a barbecue or summer picnic. SNAP participants can use the Double Up Food Bucks program to double their dollars at the Grower's Market. The Four Corners Gem & Mineral Club present the 70th Annual Gem and Mineral Show at the La Plata County Fairgrounds and Event Center July 12th through 14th. It features over 60 local and international dealers, showcasing everything from raw minerals to finely crafted jewelry and art. Stop by between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM Friday and Saturday, and 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM Sunday to participate in the silent auction and explore the various vendors. There's also a variety of kid friendly activities like gold panning and geode cutting. Admission is $5 for adults. Kids 12 and under get in free. Construction on Road 350 began Friday, June 21st on the bridge over the Animas River. Southbound lanes will be closed through July 8th, and northbound lanes will be closed starting July 9th. There will be two lanes open at all times during the construction work, so there should be little impact on traffic. All construction work is expected to be completed by August 7th.
