San Juan County received a $2 million grant to mill and resurface Road 6480 in Kirtland, a project that started about two weeks ago. The project will be done in three phases with each phase anticipated to last two to three weeks. The first phase began May 13th, phase two, which will begin this week or next, will be between the residential area and Road 6200. 6480 will be close to all traffic during the working hours of 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM and detours will be posted. Phase three will be between the intersection of 6480 and 6200, and the intersection of 6480 and Troy Road. Again, 6480 will be closed to all traffic during posted work hours with detours posted. Work is scheduled Monday through Thursday with some Fridays as needed. All roads will reopen every day at the end of all construction activities. Please pay attention to all closures, detour signs, and flaggers. Come and join the Fun at Aztec Museum this summer for the Summer Concerts in the Pioneer Village. Held the second Friday of the month at 7:00 PM, the first concert kicks off June 7th with Jane Voss and Hoyle Osborne. The performance will feature popular songs from 1921, the year the first natural gas well near Aztec came into production. Performances will continue through the summer until the final performance on October 8th. Hiking in the Southwest means encountering all sorts of wildlife, some less friendly than others. Durango Kennel Club is offering rattlesnake avoidance training this Saturday, June 1st at the Sky Ute Fairgrounds. Led by a professional dog trainer, dogs will learn how to ID rattlesnakes by scent, sound, and sight, and know to avoid the snakes through exposure to live rattlesnakes under control of an experienced handler. The cost of the training is $100 and it's not a regular class offering. So make sure to take advantage to save vet bills of over $300.
