You can't get blood from a stone, but crystals, yes. Plenty were on display at the Annual Gem & Mineral Show hosted by the San Juan County Gem & Mineral Society at McGee Park in Farmington. Prospectors and lapa artists came from across the country to sell their gemstones, fossils and jewelry. You're watching the Local News Network, brought to you by, ACE Hardware Farmington and Pop's Truck and RV Center. I'm Haley Upsell. Gem or gemstones are terms that loosely describe the of minerals and rocks. 500 different minerals are actually fluorescent under the right conditions.
So this is pink calcite from Pakistan, and it's super fluorescent with a long wave black light here, UV light. And this is like some of my favorite stuff. And anything that is fluorescent has been kind of one of my newer affections. And these are petroleum quartz from Pakistan, they have these internal little glowing pockets. And these are some of my favorite things as well. And here's some ruby and sapphire mix from India, that is just gorgeous.
Some even glow neon. Sue deals in beads that are made of stone from all over the world and cut in China.
All my beads come from all over the world.
Mm-hmm.
But they basically bring China to cut the bead and 95% is natural bead.
Paleontologist Steve Fowers displayed an impressive fossil fish from Wyoming called a Phareodus.
It's kind of rare but it's huge. And it even has teeth. You can even see its teeth if you get close right there. It was a big predator fish, it's 50 million years old. And it took my wife three months to prep it out of the matrix.
No rock show would be complete without the metaphysical nature of gems and minerals. History is rich with stories about the mystical and magical powers of stone and minerals.
I make crystal crowns and I do intention behind each one. So this one is my duality, got the rose quartz, pink opal, obsidian, hematite.
And the kids were found out back panning for gold.
Yes and any other things they might find in there. Maybe not be gold but it might be something else. So dig deep, get some dirt in there and see what you can find.
I'm getting to mud though.
It's a lot of fun. There's a lot of people out here. A lot of people having come from far away, some of 'em-
I found some cookie.
See, look that and see you've got a pretty little shiny piece.
